Angler Spotlight – Matt Arey
September 5, 2017
Q: When did you start fishing? What was the catalyst? A: When I could walk. I was fortunate to grow up on a small lake in NC called Moss Lake. It’s where my addiction began!

Q: If you could only use one rod and one lure, what would it be and why? A: Lunker frog on a 7’3″ Okuma TCS frog rod and Okuma Helios reel. Nothing better than a good frog bite!

Q: If you could fish any body of water in the world, what would it be? A: Champlain.

Q: You’ve had an incredibly successful career thus far, which achievement would you say is the most special to you? A: My first Tour level win hands down…Unbelievable what it did from a confidence standpoint. It truly allowed me to believe that I belong.

Q: Who has been a mentor for you in the fishing industry that you feel has made an impact on your professional career? A: Several without a doubt. But, Jacob Wheeler and myself really gained a lot from each other while rooming together for 4 years on Tour before he moved to BASS. I wouldn’t call him a mentor as much as a “partner in crime” lol.

Q: What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a pro fishing career? A: Take advantage of today’s opportunities. For a young person, those include high school and college fishing programs. These weren’t around when I was in college.

Q: Traditionally, Beaver Lake is one of the toughest lakes on the circuit, but you’ve had lots of success there. What would you say makes that lake a good fit for your fishing style? A: Beaver is a great pattern lake. I love to get into a rhythm of running around and dialing in on a pattern.
